A. —Air pur du dehors; espace, endroit situé à l'extérieur. La fraîcheur soudaine du plein air le fit frissonner (CHÂTEAUBRIANT, Lourdines, 1911, p.74). Le préau peut être utilisé s'il n'est pas ouvert sur le plein air (MATHIOT, Éduc. mén., 1957, p.58).

Marcel Pagnol en fit un film, une pièce déclamatoire avec quelques plein-air (Arts et litt., 1936, p.34-3). Jasset (...) perfectionna le découpage et le gros plan, fit alterner systématiquement les scènes de studio et le plein air (SADOUL, Cin., 1949, p.53).
2. ÉDUC. NAT., JEUX ET SPORTS. Ensemble d'activités de détente se déroulant à l'extérieur. Grâce au loisir, le sport, le plein air, le camping faisaient désormais partie de la vie quotidienne des travailleurs (CACÉRÈS, Hist. éduc. pop., 1964, p.100).
3. PEINT. Travail à l'extérieur et non dans un atelier. Les impressionnistes furent presque seuls à pratiquer le plein air (HUYGHE, Dialog. avec visible, 1955, p.104).
